Have you ever noticed the horizontal stripes woven into many bath towels? They are usually found near the ends of the towel and have a texture that feels noticeably different from the rest of the fabric.

A Different Type of Weave
Most of a bath towel is made with small loops of fabric that give it its soft, fluffy texture. These loops are also what help the towel absorb water after a shower or bath.
The striped section, however, is woven differently. Instead of the thick, fluffy loops found across most of the towel, this area usually has a flatter and more compact weave.
This difference is intentional. It creates a more structured section within the towel and gives the fabric a clean transition between the different areas.
That is why you can immediately feel the difference when you run your hand over the stripe. One part feels thick and soft, while the striped section feels flatter and firmer.
Is It Just Decoration?
Not entirely.
The stripes certainly have an aesthetic purpose. They give the towel a more finished appearance and add a simple visual detail to what would otherwise be a completely uniform piece of fabric.
But they can also contribute to the overall structure and finishing of the towel.
Think about how much a towel goes through. It gets folded, unfolded, twisted, washed and dried repeatedly. The different weaving pattern creates a more structured area within the fabric and is part of the way the towel is constructed.
So, while the stripes make the towel look more attractive, they are also connected to its manufacturing and finishing.
