How to Pick a Sweet Watermelon: A Simple Trick Growers Know
Choosing a watermelon can sometimes feel like a guessing game. You pick the one that looks the biggest, greenest, or most attractive, only to cut it open and discover that it isn’t as sweet as you expected.
But there are a few simple clues that can help you make a better choice. One of the most interesting is a small mark on the bottom of the watermelon that many people completely ignore.
Look at the Bottom of the Watermelon
Turn the watermelon over and look for the field spot — the area where the watermelon rested on the ground while it was growing.
This spot is usually yellow, cream-colored, or pale orange.
A watermelon with a deep, creamy yellow field spot is often a better choice than one with a very pale or almost white spot. The yellow color can indicate that the watermelon spent enough time developing on the vine and ripening naturally.
On the other hand, a very white spot may suggest that the fruit had less time to mature, although this isn’t a perfect test by itself.
Don’t Judge a Watermelon Only by Its Size
A bigger watermelon isn’t automatically a sweeter watermelon.
Instead of choosing the largest one, look for a watermelon that feels heavy for its size. Watermelons contain a lot of water, so a heavy fruit can be a good sign that it is juicy.
Pick up two watermelons that are approximately the same size. If one feels noticeably heavier, it may be the better choice.
This simple comparison takes only a few seconds and can help you avoid choosing a dry or disappointing watermelon.
